NEWS FROM NASFAA

This week on “Off the Cuff,” Hugh is joined by Jill and Sarah to provide some updates on where things stand with final rules from the negotiated rulemaking committees focusing on implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), and some updates to the NSLDS post-screening process. Jill kicks things off with a recap of the final rules – issued May 1 – from the Reimagining and Improving Student Education (RISE) Committee concerning loan limits, repayment plans, and loan programs.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon fielded questions before the House Education & Workforce Committee on Thursday, covering a broad range of education issues, including the Trump administration’s fiscal year (FY) 2027 budget request, the implementation of several provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), the “dismantling” of the Department of Education (ED), and much more.

The Department of Education (ED) on Thursday announced that it has completed its one-time fraud detection screening of all 2026-27 FAFSA forms that were submitted before ED implemented its new fraud detection measures. According to ED, this screening resulted in roughly 300,000 applications from the 2026-27 award year being selected for Verification Tracking Group V5. Schools will receive system-generated transactions for any application selected through this process.
