NEWS FROM NASFAA

Multiple media outlets are now reporting that President Donald Trump will today announce the end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. "Ending this program and penalizing individuals who were brought here through no choice of their own is unspeakably cruel and out-of-step with the foundational ideas and principles of this country," NASFAA President Justin Draeger said in a statement yesterday. Read on for the full statement and stay tuned for more news from NASFAA as it becomes available.

The Department of Education (ED) will no longer participate in a data-sharing partnership with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) regarding oversight of federal student loans, saying that the CFPB’s actions have "undermined" the mission of the Department to oversee the student loan program and protect borrowers, according to an August 31 letter sent to CFPB Director Richard Cordray.

National News

"After taking heavy criticism over the selection of a new head for the Education Department's enforcement unit, Secretary Betsy DeVos insisted Thursday that student protections are a top priority for her agency," Inside Higher Ed reports.

"A tuition-free online university called University of the People has long offered a haven for undocumented immigrants and refugees, and student interest is growing as the Trump Administration considers ending an Obama-era program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allows undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to apply for work permits, social security numbers and protection from deportation," EdSurge reports.

Opinions

"For decades, America's public flagship universities offered a reasonably priced shot at higher education for millions of bright students in the states where they were brought up. Sadly, those days are waning, as the race for affluent out-of-state students begins to crush the ambitions of students with financial need-and, may soon, deprive our nation of their talents," Harold Levy writes for the New York Daily News.

"In the pre-dawn hours on a recent Friday, my vision shifted between the dimly lit road in front of me and the sleeping visage of my 19-year-old cousin, as he slumped in the passenger seat on his way to college. It was 4 a.m., and my mind, normally peaceful at this hour, raced uncontrollably. There was the normal stuff that filled my head, like whether we forgot to pack anything and whether he'd hit it off with his roommate," Lester Davis writes for The Washington Post. "But mostly I thought about how improbable that very car ride was."
