Moving the Financial Aid Profession Into the Future: NASFAA's 2026-2031 Strategic Long-Range Plan

Dear NASFAA Members,

The future of financial aid is being shaped in real time by rapid policy changes, evolving student needs, and a higher education landscape that is anything but static. Each day, financial aid professionals navigate increasing complexity while serving as steady, trusted guides for students and families making major financial decisions. At the same time, the role of the financial aid office continues to expand — you are not only administrators of aid programs, but also advisors, advocates, strategists, and partners in advancing institutional goals and student success.

Yet the profession is still too often misunderstood, seen narrowly as compliance or transactional work rather than recognized for the strategic thinking and expertise it requires. Reshaping that perception is essential. The sustainability of the profession depends on how clearly we communicate its value to institutional leaders, policymakers, and the public, and on ensuring that the full scope of financial aid professionals' role in expanding opportunity and informing institutional decision-making is understood.

This moment calls for clarity of purpose and a shared vision for what comes next.

To that end, we are pleased to share with you NASFAA's new Strategic Long-Range Plan for 2026-2031, approved by the Board of Directors on April 3, 2026. This plan reflects not only where we are as an association, but also where we must go to support a sustainable, future-ready profession.

Over the next five years, our efforts will focus on five key themes:

  • Advocacy, Visibility & Influence – Elevating the profession and strengthening NASFAA's role as a trusted, nonpartisan policy voice.
  • Membership Value, Community & Engagement – Building a more connected, accessible, and supportive member community.
  • Growth & Development of the Profession – Investing in the workforce pipeline, leadership development, and professional excellence.
  • Innovation, Technology & Strategic Partnerships – Embracing innovation to enhance member services and expand NASFAA's reach through collaboration and emerging technologies.
  • Organizational Effectiveness, Research & Sustainability – Ensuring NASFAA remains agile, member-focused, research-informed, and financially resilient.

You will also see updates to language across our mission, vision, values, and programs related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). These changes follow Board action and a comprehensive legal review conducted over several months. As part of this work, our award-winning Diversity Leadership Program will be renamed the Developing Leaders Pipeline, and our Diversity Officer position on the Board of Directors will be renamed the Leadership Development Officer.

The federal and state policy landscape regarding higher education DEIB law and policy continues to evolve. Rather than waiting for further clarity that may not materialize, the Board determined that disciplined, proactive adjustments will help preserve broad participation across NASFAA's membership, regardless of the political winds in their state or region.

These updates are also about sustainability — not retreat. Our commitment to access, equity, and professional development, and the structure and spirit of the DLP program, remain unchanged. By refining how we describe this work, we are protecting its durability and ensuring that members nationwide can continue to engage fully with NASFAA and support students effectively.

This plan and these changes are rooted in your day-to-day realities. They reflect what we have heard from you — your challenges, aspirations, and vision for the future of this profession. It also reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that financial aid professionals are seen, supported, and valued in ways that match the importance of their work.

Thank you for the work you do every day on behalf of students, and for the vital role you play in strengthening our profession. We welcome your feedback and questions as we embark on this work together.

Sincerely,

Melanie Storey
