Background

In 2025–26, NASFAA’s Use of AI in the Financial Aid Office Task Force examined how the profession is engaging with artificial intelligence (AI). Its work included a national survey of 1,233 financial aid professionals across 834 institutions, a review of 54 institutional AI policies, and two rounds of member listening sessions. The task force presented its final report and recommendations to the NASFAA Board of Directors in June 2026, which were accepted at that meeting.

Among its recommendations, the prior task force asked NASFAA to adopt an association-wide working definition of AI written in plain language (Recommendation 1); asked the Ethics Commission to recommend that the Board update the Statement of Ethical Principles to address emerging technologies (Recommendation 2); and asked NASFAA to form a task force to create a Responsible Use of AI in Financial Aid Administration Toolkit, drawing on the resources identified throughout the report and listed in its Appendix A (Recommendation 3). This task force is charged with carrying out that work.

Purpose

The purpose of the Responsible Use of AI in Financial Aid Administration Toolkit Task Force is to:

  • Create the Responsible Use of AI in Financial Aid Administration Toolkit, a set of resources to support financial aid professionals in their daily practice.
    • The suggested resources listed in Appendix A of the previous task force’s final report are the starting point.
  • Write and recommend to the NASFAA Board of Directors an association-wide definition of AI.
  • Write and recommend updated language to the NASFAA Ethics Commission and the NASFAA Board of Directors for the Statement of Ethical Principles, addressing the use of emerging technologies, including AI, in financial aid administration.

Indicators of Success & Outcomes

By the end of its term, the task force will:

  • Deliver the Responsible Use of AI in Financial Aid Administration Toolkit to NASFAA, and submit a recommended association-wide definition of AI to the NASFAA Board of Directors.
  • Submit the recommended updated language on emerging technologies and AI to the NASFAA Ethics Commission and the NASFAA Board of Directors

Task Force Members’ Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend all virtual meetings and participate in deliberations. Notify staff liaisons if circumstances prevent attendance at a particular meeting.
  • Adhere to deadlines for submission of task force assignments.
  • Review all agenda items and background documents before each meeting and come prepared.
  • Contribute to the drafting and review of toolkit materials, the recommended definition, and the recommended ethics language between meetings.

Budget

There are no planned expenditures, as the task force will meet virtually.
