May State & Regional Association Updates

In this monthly round-up in Today's News, we would like to highlight what is going on in your state and regional financial aid administrator associations.

This month, we have the opportunity to hear from our colleagues from California, WASFAA, Kentucky, and New York.

Christina Tangalakis, president of CASFAA (California), shares that the association’s executive council members traveled to the state capitol in Sacramento on April 21 for CASFAA's annual day at the capitol event. Led by CASFAA’s vice president of state issues, Jenny Garcia, members met with legislative staff from the state assembly's higher education committee to share information about CASFAA, thank them for their work in the higher education space, and to advocate for changes to improve and support the delivery of state and federal aid. “CASFAA continues to be a leader in advocacy on issues that impact financial aid professionals and students in our great state,” Dr. Tangalakis writes.

Ashley Munro, Sister Dale Brown Summer Institute chair of WASFAA, shares that the association’s Sister Dale Brown Summer Institute will be taking place this year in Spokane, Washington on June 5-9. The registration fee covers housing, most meals, all training content, and several NASFAA U credentialing opportunities. Register before May 19 to secure your spot. WASFAA will also be hosting a P&P Summit as part of its Summer Institute. During the first-ever two-day summit, participants will hear best practices for writing P&Ps and effectively communicating them to staff, students and other stakeholders. There will be opportunities to connect with colleagues, learn from fellow WASFAA members and dedicate time to review, edit, or create a plan for tackling your office's P&Ps. The registration fee covers lodging in Spokane, Washington from June 7-9 and some meals. Learn more and register online before May 19.

Mark Messingschlager, president of KASFAA (Kentucky), shares that the association unveiled a new website at its spring 2023 conference in Lexington, Kentucky. The website features better interaction with the membership, updated databases, and ease of administration. It is also more efficient and user friendly in making and receiving payments, voting, and collecting forms and event registrations.

NYASFAAPatricia Donahue, president of NYSFAAA (New York), shares that NYSFAAA’s Tri-Regional meeting was held on April 20 at Berkeley College in New York City. The agenda included an update by Patti Donahue, NYSFAAA president, a FAFSA simplification panel discussion, a New York State Higher Education Services Corporation update, and a presentation by Dennis Martinez of Ellucian. The meeting was followed by a Networking Happy Hour.

Check back next month to see what your colleagues are doing across the country, and check out your colleagues’ updates from previous months!
