Choosing Between an In-State, Out-of-State College

"As students build their college lists, they will find themselves weighing where to attend college, including whether to stay in their home state or head to another part of the U.S.," U.S. News & World Report writes.

..."Private universities often have higher sticker prices but may award larger institutional scholarships and merit-based aid supported by large endowments. So students should look beyond the sticker price when comparing their options, experts say.

The sticker price includes the direct and indirect costs – tuition, fees, housing, transportation, miscellaneous expenses and books, says Megan Walter, senior policy analyst at the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators. The net price, on the other hand, is the amount students pay after factoring in any gift aid – which doesn't have to be paid back – such as grants and scholarships."
