NEWS FROM NASFAA

As college costs rise, more people have turned to lawmakers to hold institutions accountable for providing high quality student success outcomes. Seeking to address accountability metrics and provide recommendations to lawmakers working to reauthorize the Higher Education Act (HEA), a panel of higher education experts discussed loan repayment rates on Tuesday.

The University of Phoenix (UOP) agreed to cancel $141 million in unpaid student tuition balances and pay $50 million to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) after the group alleged that the institution falsely advertised that it worked with companies like AT&T, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Twitter, and The American Red Cross to create job opportunities for students. UOP wrote in a written statement that the ads were published “under prior ownership and concluded before the FTC’s inquiry began,” adding that while UOP has not admitted to any wrongdoing, it hopes the settlement — the largest FTC has procured against a for-profit school — “will enable [UOP] to maintain focus on its core mission of improving the lives of students through career-relevant higher education.”
