NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASFAA Office Closed May 31 for the Memorial Day Federal Holiday

The NASFAA office will be closed on Monday, May 31 for the Memorial Day federal holiday. NASFAA's Today's News will not be sent and AskRegs and technical and membership support will not be available until the office reopens on Tuesday, June 1.

We're not 100% certain at this time. Taxation is not our area of expertise, so we reached out to NACUBO, and this is their response: "The whole point of this aid is of an emergency nature and is not intended to be diminished in value by applying existing tax rules to discharges of student debt or awards of aid to international students that would apply under 'normal' circumstances. Of course none of that is written into statute, but taking the whole view of the IRS position characterizing the grants as disaster relief, we believe this approach makes the most sense for serving students." View the full answer to this question to learn more and search for answers to your other pressing regulatory and compliance questions in NASFAA's AskRegs Knowledgebase.

Thanks to everyone who took a trip through the Student Aid Reference Desk scavenger hunt last week! We are pleased to announce our five randomly selected winners are: Lyosi Alvarado of the University of Arkansas; Alex Breckenridge of Western Illinois University; Diana Medina of California State University, Northridge; Julia Middlebrooks of the University of South Carolina at Aiken; and Victoria Motley of the University of Florida. Complete this form with your scavenger hunt answers to be entered to win next week's prize.

Please join us in congratulating Nydia Nittmann, associate vice president of enrollment management at Northern Arizona University, who will retire in June after 30 years in the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid. She previously served as a financial aid advisor, business analyst, director, and executive director. Her staff notes that she will be missed by many around campus for her wealth of knowledge, campus history, leadership, and friendship. Celebrate your career developments by completing the "Movers and Shakers" form to share the news with your colleagues. We'll review your submission and then post your update to our Movers and Shakers page for all to see.
