NEWS FROM NASFAA

On Monday, NASFAA submitted comments to the Department of Education (ED) on its proposed 2023-24 FAFSA, which is largely unchanged from the 2022-23 FAFSA aside from the removal of questions related to Selective Service registration and prior drug convictions, which are no longer required to determine student eligibility. NASFAA noted that the removal of the question “Are you male or female,” which was part of determining the need for Selective Service registration, could have unintended consequences. NASFAA also noted necessary changes to the 2023-24 FAFSA should ED opt to use its authority to implement provisional independent student status on-time on July 1, 2023.

On Monday, NASFAA submitted joint comments with the Vera Institute of Justice on the Department of Education’s (ED) proposed Incarcerated Applicant Form. The comments urged ED to make significant changes to the form — which as proposed is identical to the standard FAFSA — noting the unique challenges faced by incarcerated students. The groups recommended that ED use its authority to implement provisional independent student status on-time for incarcerated students, and also requested that ED de-prioritize verification selection for this population.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Colleges understand the high-risk nature of a federal program review and want to prepare in advance. One school contacted Blue Icon for help. The engagement provided the school with a platform to advocate for financial aid: "Overall, it's going to force us to be more aware across the institution how Title IV programs impact the entire campus." Do you want help preparing for a review? Contact Blue Icon today.

In this webinar on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. ET, hear directly from Lassandra Brice, associate director of student financial aid at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University, on the institution's vision to transform the student aid experience and how increased process automation and transparency with Oracle Student Financial Planning (SFP) helped the university make progress on its goal to swing wide the campus gates for more students. In fact, in its first year of using Oracle SFP, FAMU was able to increase its FAFSA submissions by 26% and its financial aid awards by 47%. The session will also include a product demo from Oracle and audience Q&A. Register now.
