NEWS FROM NASFAA

The House by a vote of 218-203 advanced legislation that would overturn President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan and end the pause on federal student loan payments.

Two of the Department of Education’s (ED) top higher education officials — Under Secretary James Kvaal and Federal Student Aid (FSA) Chief Operating Officer Richard Cordray — on Wednesday testified during a House Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittee hearing, which touched on issues over President Joe Biden’s student loan cancellation plan, the pause on student loan payments, gainful employment regulations, and more.

A pair of House Republican leaders are accusing the Biden administration of seeking to “hijack” federal courts in order to advance a borrower defense settlement, and have launched an investigation into the Department of Education’s (ED) processes for carrying out the relief.
