NEWS FROM NASFAA

This week on “Off the Cuff,” Hugh and Sarah highlight some updates concerning borrower defense and preview comments for the 2027-28 FAFSA. Sarah kicks things off with a background on borrower defense and a recent trend in which some schools have seen an increase in claims. Sarah then provides details on NASFAA’s preview comments for the upcoming FAFSA and explains how members can use that information to inform their own comments.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) on Wednesday announced the dates for two new live Q&A webinars focused on new regulations under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). The first webinar, on Friday, April 10, from 1-2 p.m. ET, will focus on the schedule of reductions that institutions will be required to use when reducing annual loan limits for students who are not enrolled full-time. The second webinar, on Friday, April 17, from 1-2 p.m. ET, will focus on answering questions about the legacy loan limit provisions in OBBBA. FSA noted that registration is not needed to watch these webinars, however, participation will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. FSA can accommodate up to 5,000 attendees in each live session. If you are unable to attend, FSA will provide a recording and transcript of the webinar the week following the live session. Instructions on how to attend and access the webinars are available in FSA’s announcement. Additional webinars in this series, which was first announced during the FSA conference, will be announced in the “coming weeks,” according to FSA.

The Department of Education (ED) has provided more details on recent Borrower Defense to Repayment (BDR) claim notices in a recent Electronic Announcement (EA), and reminded schools of the notification and adjudication process for BDR claims.
