A majority of Americans (56%) do not believe traditional college is worth the cost, according to a 2023 public opinion poll in The Wall Street Journal. Current public debate regarding the cost of college echoes this belief. Kathleen deLaski, journalist and chair of the Education Design Lab, tackles this divisive topic in “Who Needs College Anymore?” She proposes expanding the definition of college beyond the traditional model to include apprenticeships, internships, micro-credentials, and other experience-focused learning. In the following book review, Mary Stevenson, operations specialist, Office of Financial Aid, Brenau University, shares her opinions of its contents. What follows are her takeaways, thoughts, and reflections.

No. According to guidance NASFAA has received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), the school does not recalculate the Direct Loan or apply the Schedule of Reductions (SOR) before performing the return of Title IV funds (R2T4) calculation when:

  • The student begins attendance and withdraws before a Direct Loan disbursement has been made; or

  • The student drops or adds classes before withdrawing before the loan disbursement has been made.
