Scott Re-Elected to Lead House Democrats on the Education and the Workforce Committee

By Hugh T. Ferguson, NASFAA Managing Editor

Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) was re-elected to continue to serve as ranking member for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for the upcoming 119th Congress. Scott said that he would continue to fight to ensure access to high-quality education.

Recently, House Republicans selected Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) to chair the committee for the upcoming 119th Congress, succeeding current chair Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.).

“Whenever possible, I will work across the aisle, with Chair-elect Walberg, to find common ground, and advance sound, evidence-based policies,” Scott said. “And I will stand up to the incoming-Administration if they attempt to roll back the progress we have made in the last four years.”

During the 118th Congress, Scott cosponsored the Bipartisan Workforce Pell Act in 2023, a bill that would allow Pell Grants to support students enrolled in “high-quality” short-term education programs.

The legislation was also sponsored by Walberg.

“Over the past several years, Representative Bobby Scott has served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce as both Chair and Ranking Member,” said Nalia Medina, NASFAA’s assistant director of government relations. “As the new congressional session approaches, we remain committed to working with him and others on key higher education and student aid priorities.”
