Senate Passes Government Funding Bill, One Step Closer to Ending Historic Shutdown

By Maria Carrasco, NASFAA Staff Reporter

After over a month of the government being shut down, the Senate on Monday night passed a government funding bill that would fund the Department of Education (ED) and other agencies through January 30, 2026.

On Sunday, the Senate initially advanced a House-passed funding bill. On Monday night, the Senate ultimately passed the legislation, in a 60-40 vote with support from eight Democrats.

The bill would fund the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs and military construction projects, and the operations of Congress for the entire 2026 fiscal year. Other agencies, including ED, would be funded through January 30, 2026.

The House must now pass the legislation to end the shutdown, which according to POLITICO, could be as early as Wednesday. House Speaker Mike Johnson urged members on Monday to begin returning to Capitol Hill to vote on this legislation.
