NEWS FROM NASFAA

The House Education & Workforce Committee on Wednesday advanced a legislative package that would transfer several of the Department of Education’s (ED) responsibilities and appropriations to other agencies within the federal government.

NASFAA is pleased to share a draft of its response to the Department of Education's (ED) request for comments on its information collection for the Federal Direct Loan Program Regulations for Forbearance and Loan Rehabilitation, specifically ED's new Digital Rehabilitation Application. NASFAA's comments address the application's default status banner and pre-application disclosure language, including a recommendation that ED account for the second rehabilitation opportunity created by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) starting July 1, 2027, as well as the sequencing of spousal information collection during the Marital Status step. NASFAA hopes our members will use these comments to inform their own comments, which are due July 20, 2026.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) on Tuesday announced three additional virtual office hour sessions this month, and rescheduled its webinar focused on the Student Tuition and Transparency System and Earnings Accountability (STATS) and Earnings Accountability final rule. The webinar will now take place on July 29 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ET. FSA also provided an updated list of the schedules for its virtual office hours on July 16, 23, and 30 from 3-4 p.m. ET.
