Federal Student Aid (FSA) on Wednesday officially launched the 2027-28 FAFSA, just a week before the October 1 deadline.

NASFAA is pleased to share its comments on Federal Student Aid's (FSA) FY 2026-30 Draft Strategic Plan, which outlines four goals: ensuring aid delivery for every eligible student, increasing student loan repayment, modernizing technology infrastructure, and empowering employees. NASFAA's comments address each goal in the draft, calling for FSA to restore the state data-sharing API, commit to measurable service standards for FAFSA processing, and address persistent backlogs in IDR and PSLF processing. The comments also urge FSA to develop a single portal for borrowers to view their full loan portfolios, resolve longstanding access and data-integration problems across FSA systems, and prioritize retention of staff with deep programmatic knowledge following recent workforce reductions.

NASFAA’s 2026-27 State Advocacy Network is underway! The network will provide a forum for members from across the states and regions who follow state financial aid legislation and coordinate state-level advocacy efforts to share best practices related to communication with state lawmakers, student engagement, and advocacy campaigns. The group will also inform NASFAA’s policy team of any additional tools or resources needed to support advocacy efforts at the state level.
