NEWS FROM NASFAA

This month, we have the opportunity to hear from our colleagues from Nevada, Florida, Washington, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina about upcoming conferences happening in October and beyond. Additionally, we get to hear from our colleagues from Massachusetts about recently held trainings. Our colleagues from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and the Eastern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (EASFAA) also give us exciting updates about their associations.

Federal Student Aid (FSA) updated its online training course offerings for implementation of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) on Thursday with a new self-paced course: Student Tuition and Transparency System (STATS) and Earnings Accountability Overview. According to FSA, this course offers high-level information about STATS data reporting, consumer information disclosures, the earnings premium measure, and accountability requirements for educational programs. To access the course, users should log in to the FSA Training Center, select “Statutory & Regulatory Updates,” and then choose the STATS and Earnings Accountability learning track.

NASFAA UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Scenario: The academic year is defined as 24 credits—12 in the fall semester and 12 in the spring semester. The student withdraws from all fall courses after the Direct Loan is disbursed in the fall (and does not qualify for any of the R2T4 exemptions). The student returns in spring and registers for 12 credits. Answer: According to guidance NASFAA received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA/OB3) did not change return of Title IV funds (R2T4) rules under 34 CFR 668.22, so you will calculate R2T4 like you always would under existing rules without first recalculating the loan.
