A majority of Americans (56%) do not believe traditional college is worth the cost, according to a 2023 public opinion poll in The Wall Street Journal. Current public debate regarding the cost of college echoes this belief. Kathleen deLaski, journalist and chair of the Education Design Lab, tackles this divisive topic in “Who Needs College Anymore?” She proposes expanding the definition of college beyond the traditional model to include apprenticeships, internships, micro-credentials, and other experience-focused learning.
