Following a lawsuit filed by the Association of American Universities (AAU), a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Department of Education (ED) prohibiting it from publishing the names or other identifying information of foreign donors reported by AAU member institutions under Section 117 of the Higher Education Act (HEA).
A federal judge last week issued a preliminary injunction, ordering the Department of Education (ED) to treat a naturopathic medicine degree (N.D.) as a “professional” degree and therefore be eligible for the higher loan limits set by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA). Judge Michael Simon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon found cause for the lawsuit brought on by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges, the Naturopathic Medical Student Association, and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. The preliminary injunction issued by Simon covers the three association plaintiffs and their members. Notably, this injunction is the first to affirmatively award “professional degree” status to a single degree, law firm Thompson Coburn LLP wrote. In June, a federal judge set aside the Department’s additional requirements in the RISE final rule for professional degree status, but left it to ED to decide which programs meet the statutory three-part test and were therefore eligible to be included in its new guidance listing professional degree programs.
Celebrated each year on the third Wednesday in October, Financial Aid Day recognizes the dedication and impact of financial aid professionals across the country who help students turn their college dreams into reality. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the people who make a difference in students’ lives every day. Whether you host an office party, organize a potluck, raise a toast, or simply take a moment to recognize your colleagues, Financial Aid Day is the perfect time to show appreciation for the financial aid administrators, leaders, and consultants who make this work possible. A few of our higher education policy partners also wanted to wish you all a happy Financial Aid Day.
