The Senate on Dec. 5, 2019 unanimously passed an amended version of the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act, which was previously passed by the House and would allow for direct data sharing between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Education (ED). This is the same data-sharing provision that was included in last year's FAFSA Act, a bill that NASFAA has strongly supported. NASFAA subsequently released a statement in support of the amended bill and urged members to contact their representatives in the House to bring the bill to the floor for a full vote. The House on December 10 overwhelmingly passed an amended version of the bill, which went back to the Senate and was quickly passed the same day under unanimous consent. The bill now heads to the desk of President Donald Trump to be signed into law. Trump is expected to sign the bill.
