January State & Regional Association Updates

By Maria Carrasco, NASFAA Staff Reporter

In this monthly round-up in Today's News, we would like to highlight what’s going on in your state and regional associations.

This month, we have the opportunity to hear from our colleagues from Texas, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and the Southern Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (SASFAA).

Denise Welch, president of TASFAA (Texas), shares that the association had its first board meeting in Houston at its 2024 conference site. She adds that dates for TASFAA’s regional training have been set in areas all over the state. “Great meeting with our board and committee chairs,” Denise writes.

Elyse Weller, president of ILASFAA (Illinois), shares that the 2024 ILASFAA Annual Conference will be held March 4-6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bloomington, Illinois. Registration for the conference is now open.

Carmen Rivera Laboy, EASFAA representative for PRASFAA (Puerto Rico), shares that in early December, the association celebrated its annual conference and 50th anniversary. The event took place on December 4-8, 2023, at Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort and included a variety of activities to enhance members’ knowledge in federal, state and local regulations. Some of the activities scheduled during this event were a virtual training on Pell Grants, a president’s symposium, and more. The association would like to express its appreciation to Justin Draeger, NASFAA president and CEO, that addressed the general session “The New FAFSA”; Danette Burgess, EASFAA president; and Juan Antonio Rodríguez Laboy, PRACRAO president, for supporting this great event, Carmen writes.

Michelle Hemmer, communications and outreach chair for SASFAA,
shares that the association’s annual conference is scheduled for February 25-28 at the Wyndham Grand Orlando in Bonnett Creek, Florida, and is completely solid out and is on a waitlist. “The SASFAA Board is thrilled that there has been so much interest and we cannot wait to see everyone in February,” Michelle writes.

Check back next month to see what your colleagues are doing across the country, and check out your colleagues’ updates from previous months!
