The Department of Education (ED) on Thursday announced an extension on the 2026 financial value transparency and gainful employment (FVT/GE) reporting deadline for institutions, with a new deadline of Friday, January 15, 2027, after more than 1,000 institutions failed to meet the initial October 1 reporting deadline.
According to ED, institutions that failed to meet the October 1 reporting deadline are now considered delinquent. These institutions must submit the required 2026 FVT/GE data by January 15, 2027, or choose to early implement the Student Tuition and Transparency System (STATS) reporting requirements for the 2026 reporting cycle, which requires less data elements be reported. The deadline is January 15, whether the schools early implements STATS or chooses to report under the FVT/GE requirements.
ED also announced that roughly 1,400 institutions remain delinquent on reporting requirements for the 2024 and 2025 FVT/GE reporting cycles, and they have until January 15, 2027 to submit any unreported or underreported FVT/GE data. Institutions are able to revise or correct any previously submitted FVT/GE data through January 15, 2027, without being classified as delinquent. Institutions are not required to provide a statement to the Secretary that explains why the institution failed to comply with reporting, as long as they meet the January 15 deadline.
ED provided an updated spreadsheet that lists specific file components for institutions, which now shows 2026 reporting data as well.
In an effort to support institutions, ED announced in a separate Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) two webinars to help with FVT/GE and STATS reporting requirements. The first webinar, on Thursday, October 29, from 1-2 p.m. ET, is focused on how institutions submit FVT/GE and STATS data to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). The second webinar, on Tuesday, November 10, from 2-3 p.m. ET, is hosted by the American Council on Education (ACE), and will feature a discussion with ED officials on the FVT/GE and STATS reporting requirements.
In the announcement, ED also noted that Federal Student Aid (FSA) will host a session focused on FVT/GE and STATS reporting at the December 2026 FSA Training Conference.
ED stressed that it will not grant further extensions to submit data for the 2024, 2025, or 2026 reporting cycles, and stated that it will consider taking action against institutions that fail to submit all required FVT/GE data by the deadline through heightened cash monitoring, fines, sanctions, or other actions.
