The Department of Education (ED) published an electronic announcement on Monday announcing that public institutions no longer need to submit public status documentation via eZ-Audit unless specifically requested by ED.
The announcement reminded schools of the financial responsibility regulatory requirements for public institutions, including requiring a letter from an official government entity stating that the school is backed by the full faith and credit of the government entity. While schools were previously required to submit this letter to ED via eZ-Audit, they will now only need to maintain this documentation and make it available to ED if requested in the future. ED reminded schools that this documentation still may be requested as part of program reviews, recertification applications, and other processes.
If a school already submitted the letter to ED via eZ-Audit, ED will review the documentation and provide a response. If corrections are needed, ED will assume the school and government entity will correct the documentation and keep it on file. The school will not be required to resubmit the letter once corrected, but ED may request to review the corrected documentation in the future. The electronic announcement includes a link to previously published questions and answers, highlighting that questions FR-Q7, FR-Q8, and FR-Q9 address the financial responsibility requirements for public institutions.
