College Signing Day Set for April 26

By Joan Berkes, Policy & Federal Relations Staff

Reach Higher, First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to encourage at least some education after high school, has announced that College Signing Day is scheduled for April 26 this year. College Signing Day expands the concept that has focused attention just on student-athletes, to celebrate and support all students who commit to higher education.

The initiative was described by Reach Higher and White House officials in a conference call held on January 29, to be repeated on February 2 and 4, at 2:00 pm. The call-in number is 888-989-8174, participant code: 8447933. The conference call includes a question and answer period. For example, several attendees on the January 29 call discussed their experiences with the impact of the FSA ID on filing FAFSAs.

The call and an associated tool kit give suggestions for conducting a College Signing Day. Event ideas span the full spectrum of educational levels. By registering their events at Reach Higher, communities may request a visit from a senior Obama administration representative on April 26 or another day, including the First Lady and Secretary of Education John King.

The call also highlights other tools aimed at FAFSA completion and student aid awareness:

  • FASFA Completion Initiative: State grant agencies can provide with limited filing status information to districts and high schools with appropriate data sharing agreements, to identify students who have not completed the FAFSA.

Note that you may also find Financial Aid Night presentation materials and other supportive tools on the NASFAA website under the "Students, Parents, and Counselors” tab.
