The Department of Education (ED) in an announcement on Friday said it would delay the institutional reporting deadline for gainful employment (GE) and financial value transparency (FVT) from October 1, 2024, until January 15, 2025.
In March, ED announced a two-month extension of the GE and FVT reporting deadline from July 31 to October 1, 2024. Recently a group of 20 bipartisan Senators called on ED to delay the deadline until July 2025.
For nine months, NASFAA has repeatedly urged ED to delay the deadline to alleviate some of the administrative burden placed on financial aid offices as they assist students through the aid application process. These administrative burdens have partly been due to department missteps and errors.
In an electronic announcement published Friday, ED noted that following a series of listening sessions they have determined that a further delay will enable institutions and stakeholders to prioritize their work on the FAFSA.
“The new January 15 FVT/GE reporting deadline will ensure that institutions can prioritize critical activities that might still remain for the 2024-25 FAFSA as well as prepare for the release of the 2025-26 FAFSA,” the announcement read. “At the same time, the Department will work toward producing the first complete set of results under FVT/GE in time to help inform students’ college decisions next award year.”
While NASFAA has pushed the department to postpone the reporting deadline until July 2025, this short-term extension does offer some reprieve from the impending October 1 deadline and the planned launch of the 2025-26 FAFSA.
“While any delay certainly helps, as colleges grapple with ongoing application glitches caused by federal errors, extending the reporting timeline to July, as NASFAA and a bipartisan group of 20 lawmakers have requested, would offer much-needed support,” said NASFAA Interim President and CEO Beth Maglione. “Extending the GE/FVT deadline to July 2025 would offer financial aid professionals greater certainty and additional relief during the planned ‘beta launch’ and delayed rollout of the 2025-26 FAFSA.””

First, Jan 15 is immediately after the spring semester begins, which means we have to prioritize reporting once again over meeting the demands of students, making disbursements, resolving student financing issues, etc. Pretty insensitive date selection.
Second, is it a coincidence that the data will be secured at ED just before a new president is sworn in?
